CartelNet is a multilingual management system of interactive digital labels designed for museums, exhibits and similar establishments.
.
What is a museum label ?
A museum label is a card describing an exhibited work. It is often printed on paper or cardboard and is placed near the work it is referring to
Limitations
of paper labels
Paper
labels offer a limited surface to describe the exhibited
work.
If a museum receives a multilingual public, the descriptive
text has to be displayed in several languages on the same
label. Hence, the amount of information that can be
provided is reduced. Furthermore, paper labels cannot
inform the curator on how many people have viewed each
exhibited work, …
Digital RFID
labels: Why? For whom ?
Digital
labels offer several advantages for both visitors and
curators. For Visitors:
When entering an exhibition equipped with dynamic digital
labels, each visitor is given an RFID credit-card-sized,
no-contact badge.
The visitor needs only to scan his/her badge on the RFID
reader situated near each exhibited work. The screen above
will automatically display the brief description of the
work. This information will be displayed in the
visitor’s preferred language and profile (children,
adults etc.). The information needn’t only be text,
but can also include images, videos,
music, …
At the end of the visit, a
visitor can provide his/her email address. The visitor will
then receive an email recapping their entire visit,
including descriptions of all works viewed.
For Curators: CartelNet provide
real-time statistics on:
- The number of visitors at an exhibition, the type of public
- Which works are most viewed and which are least
viewed (allowing for repositioning of some, if
necessary).
Functionality and technical aspects of Cartel Net
CartelNet allows to you create dynamic, digital labels for all each of your exhibitions. CartelNet comprises:
- The CartelNet software
- A Server: desktop (or laptop) computer (Macintosh, Windows or linux) on which the software must to be installed.
- One digital label per exhibited object. Each label consists of a mini-computer, a screen that can be positioned horizontally or vertically and a no-contact card reader (RFID).
- Access cards (to be given to visitors at the time of their visit).
- An Ethernet or WIFI computer network (optional) to connect the server to the digital labels.
.
The administrator can then create as many exhibitions as
needed and, for each of them, define any languages,
versions and/or profiles (adults, children, students etc.)
required.
For example: schools can be allowed to provide their own
labels for exhibited works. These can be added to the
exhibit without having to delete the official labels
designed for the general public. With one click of the
mouse, the administrator can switch the general
public’s labels to those written by the pupils.
